Happy birthday to Robert Indiana! Indiana was born Sept. 13 in 1928. In the fifties, he lived on the Manhattan waterfront, where he first began to see the world as an opportunity for visual art. Today, he is famous for art portrayed through multiple mediums, from poetry to painting.

He is most well known for his large, unusual sculptures. Whether you know his name or not, most would recognize pieces of his iconic works. Perhaps the most famous is the colorful LOVE sculpture. The original was created in 1966, but innumerable versions are found everywhere, from cufflinks to graffiti. It’s been duplicated in different colors, sizes, styles, and languages.

Spring of 2015, the University of Oklahoma acquired their very own LOVE sculpture due to a generous donation from 1957 OU alumnus William Obering. It sits outside Jacobson Hall, the OU Visitors Center.
