Off the Wall: Treat Yourself, Maya Stewart Style

Welcome to Off the Wall. We’ve gathered news from around the museum, and want to share the highlights with you.

Written while trying to decide between the cross-body fringe and the gold Tokyo wristlet.

What do Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington, and Carrie Underwood have in common? They’ve all carried designs by Maya Stewart, a Native American designer of Chickasaw, Creek, and Choctaw descent. Her designs have been featured in publications like Vogue, Vanity Fair, Elle, and W Magazine, and her collections have been presented at Paris, New York, and Los Angeles Fashion Week. So, you’re probably wondering: am I telling you this to make you incredibly jealous? Or perhaps to trigger a spontaneous shopping spree? Well, yes. But mostly, I’m telling you because Maya Stewart will be here, at your favorite museum, in your favorite museum store (Muse), from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 30.

It Gets Even Better

You’re excited. I know. But as amazing as ‘Maya Stewart here in person’ is, it gets even better. For the evening of March 30th only, Maya will have her designs in Muse at 20% off! It doesn’t get much better than that. If you can’t make it to the event, that’s okay–you’ll still have time to pop in and spend your money in the upcoming weeks! But don’t forget–March 30th from 6 to 8 p.m. is the only time that you can take advantage of a 20% discount. Need a pencil to circle that date ten times in your calendar? Here, borrow mine. Following the launch party, Maya’s designs will be offered for a very limited time.

More About the Designer

As a designer, Maya strives to “resist the ordinary and ignore the conventional path to creativity.” Her work is heavily influenced by her Native American ancestry and often reveals designs and motifs similar to those seen in tribal culture. Her designs strive to express the beauty of her culture and feature geometric designs inspired by American Indian weaving, pottery, moccasins, and baskets. Rather than finding the cheapest or easiest methods to create her products, Maya draws on the skills and knowledge of American Indian artisans to create truly special and well-crafted fashion pieces.

Collections: Maya Stewart currently features 10 unique collections, each flaunting a different aesthetic and style, but quality materials and sturdy leather are a constant. If you’re a fringe-aholic, you should check out the MONTANA or ARROW collections. If you can’t get enough of metallic, you really can’t go wrong with the KINGS or TOKYO collections. Stewart’s products mostly consist of handbags, wristlets, and larger purses, but she also offers several stunning (and affordable!) bracelets and key chains.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some fine leather goods to peruse.
